Hungarian Art Nouveau – and more besides
Less than 30 years ago few people other than academics would have recognised the importance of Central Europe’s contribution to art nouveau. Today that situation has changed dramatically. Whilst the art nouveau attractions of cities such as Barcelona show little sign of losing their global appeal, the more adventurous cultural traveller is now seeking out new destinations.
Budapest’s contribution to early 20th century design and architecture is now widely established. Its Museum of Applied Arts is a masterpiece of Hungarian art nouveau as is the impressive György Ráth villa. Elsewhere, the Gellert Baths (the city’s most celebrated spa and wellness centre) and the impressive Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music highlight the diversity of Budapest’s art nouveau patrimony.
However, look further east and a number of attractive, additional destinations await -and all accessible from Budapest.
Szeged, Hungary: 150km to the south-east of Budapest, the city of Szeged is blessed with multiple art nouveau buildings including the Reök Palace, the New Synagogue (the fourth largest synagogue in the world) and the Ungár-Mayer Palace.
Subotica, Serbia: Less than 50km from Szeged, the Serbian city of Subotica also celebrates a rich art nouveau heritage. Architectural highlights include the City Hall, Raichle Palace, and the Jakab and Komor Square Synagogue.
Oradea, Romania: North-west of Szeged and just 10km from the Hungarian border, Oradea reflects the importance of art nouveau architecture across the former Austro-Hungarian Empire. Buildings such as the Moskovits Miksa Palace, the Darvas-La Roche House and the Black Eagle Palace are all richly detailed.
